HERBAL SALVES – HERBAL INGREDIENTS

Herbal Salve Definition

A medicinal ointment for healing or relieving wounds and sores.  A topical substance used for a wide variety of topical uses including to soothe, mollify, or relieve the skin and muscles.  The addition of beeswax offers additional benefits including protective, soothing, emollient, nourishing, and healing properties.  Although semi-solid at room temperature, salves soften once applied to the skin, making them less messy to apply than oils.

“Healing Salve”

Yarrow Flower

Also known as soldiers wound wort, yarrow is an excellent first aid herb and is very helpful for the skin.  It has anti-bacterial, antioxidant, and blood suppression properties, and is good for oily or inflamed skin and helps to keep wound infections at bay.

Plantain

Contains anti-inflammatory effects, and it is also rich in tannin (which helps draw tissues together to stop bleeding) and allantoin (a compound that promotes healing of injured skin cells).  It is great for treating sunburns, stings, insect bites, snakebites, poison ivy breakouts, rashes, burns, blisters, and cuts.

Comfrey

This is one of the best-known healing herbs of all times.  It is commonly used in topical treatment of burns, skin ulcerations, abrasions, lacerations, flea and insect bites, and just about any skin irritation.  Its astringent tannins form a protective surface over wounds that promotes healing.

“Aches & Pains Salve”

St. John’s Wort

When applied topically, the great soothing anti-irritant properties of St. John's Wort are known to heal burns, sunburns, and to calm different kinds of irritations and allergic reactions.  It helps relieve the inflammation of bruises and other skin irritations, relieving pressure at the site of the wound.

Cottonwood Buds

Cottonwood contains tannins and pain relieving, anti-inflammatory, and fever-reducing salicylates. In addition, it has anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties.  This salve, made with its resin, can be used to bring pain relief caused by swelling, arthritis, strains, and general muscle pains.
